One spans a few weeks and shows a character improving his physical prowess, the other spans decades and shows the progression of an entire life. Both the beginning of Up and a Rocky training montage compress time to show the audience the progressions of the main character. If someone doubts that this should be counted as a montage, consider the following. Through it we get in his headspace to a point that we might consider it crazy if he didn’t tie hundreds of balloons to his house in order to fly to Paradise falls. Making a grumpy elderly man a sympathetic character that we want to root for. It gets us to know this character in an intimate way. But in the context of the entire script it functions as a montage through his and Ellies live. The beginning of Up can almost be seen as a short movie on itself. But this might not be my favorite montage of all time. To this day I still fist pump every time he manages to climb to the top of those stairs. Hopefully this can help you to get started the right way. So for anyone who thinks about including a montage in their story, stick around for a bit. Something that every time I attempted it felt like writing a complete story packed in just three minutes. ![]() For how simple they may look, actually going out there and writing one can be a daunting task. When done right, these sequences can become some of the most fun you can have with a story. Enabling you too quickly show progression in characters, bring exposition in a more energetic way or compress time. The montage is a powerful tool in a screenwriter’s arsenal. A staple of sports movies, a pseudo music video and what cemented “Eye of the Tiger” to the top of our workout playlist.
